What is a MUD?
MUD stands for Multi-User Dimension or Multi-User Dungeon. SoulMUD: Omega is made to be an interactive dynamic game, where people from across the world can come to roleplay and interact. The creators and builders of the mud have made an entire world for you to explore, with creatures, quests, and magic. When you log in, you can create a character and use this personalized incarnation to explore the world (and perhaps conquer it as well).

How do I connect to SoulMUD?
To connect to SoulMUD from Windows, first connect to the internet, and then telnet to soulmud.doesntexist.org port 4242. Alternatively, you may click on the 'connect' button in the navbar to the right. Eventually, when you become more accustomed to SolMUD, you will probably want to download a client. See the resources page more information on downloading a client.

What password should I choose?
When asked to choose a password, please choose one that will not easily be guessed. For example, your birthdate, character name, real name, or the word 'password' are all bad passwords. A good way I've found to make a password is to think of a sentence or song lyric I like, and then use the first letters of each word. For exmaple, "I did it all for the nookie!" would be 'idiaftn'. This is not an easily guessed password, but it is easy to remember. Its funny, but people seem to use the same passwords for years on end. This is a NO-NO for security, but its your password, remember it.

Im at the Infirmary. Next
The mortal circle of guilds are 2east and south from where you enter game. (or east, south, east and south from the Western wall). You regen better in infirmaries, but training for your character may only be found in a guild. You will have quite a bit of exp, should you decide to level up and spend it.

Okay, so I logged in, and made a character, now what?
Well, first type 'help'. This will bring up a relatively short list of certain online help the mud provides. If you type 'commands' it will give you a list of commands. Some basic things you need to know: if you would like to say something and have the whole room hear it, type 'say [argument]' where [argument] is that which you want to say. To say something to 1 particular person (and have some privacy), use the tell command. The syntax is 'tell [playername] [argument]', where [playername] is the name of the person you wish to tell. If additional help is necessary, feel free to ask anyone on, as most will be willing to assist you.

Your help files suck
Yes, I do realize this, DIKU text management is a hassle, especially on a project as large as this one. Ive tried to document stuff here on the web page, almost all of the abilities can be found in the ability index.

So who else is logged in here?
Simply type 'who', and a list of all players who are connected and visible to you will be listed.

How do I move around?
You can move in 6 different directions: North, South, East, West, Up, and Down. To see the exits in a room, type 'look'. This will show you the room you are currently in, and also display the possible exits in the room. True to real life, if you can't see an exit in a particular direction, you probably can't move that way unless of course it's a closed door. Most doors can be detected by typing 'look [direction]', direction being where you would like to check for a door or secret opening.

I now know how to move. What's next?
Since your all saddled up, make sure you type 'wear all' and 'wield sword'. Feel free to browse around town (don't go too far out at first). When you see something you'd like to kill, first type 'consider [creature]', where [creature] is the name of the thing you wish to kill. The consider command will do a basic comparison between you and the creature (also known as a mob, or mobile), and will tell you whether or not you have a fighting shot. As you increase in levels, the accuracy of this commands dwindles to almost useless, but as a newbie, it is very helpful. Once you decide to kill something, type 'kill [creature]' and you will begin combat. If you know spells or skills that may help your cause, use them.

What do I do if I die?
If you die, it's not the end of the world. Simply type the command 'ressurect' and you will find yourself, and all of your belongings, back in town or at the temple of the god you follow. Note: depending on your difficulty you choose when creating your character. Normal characters will never delete, Roughnecks will do so only when their karma has passed below -4, and hardcores only ever get that life they start with.

How do I 'group' with someone?
If you would like to team up with others and kill, type 'group [yourname]'. Then, once a leader is chosen, type 'follow [leadersname]'. Now you will all split the experience. Groups can be of unlimited sizes and strengths.

Who do I talk to if I have a problem?
You may talk to any immort or mortal. You may use the 'page' command to contact an immortal if they are around, 'page hey you, i have a question' will likely net an immortal response.

What are Gods and Wizards?
Gods, Immortals, and Wizards are there to create the world around you, and also assist you in having fun. If you have a problem, feel free to talk to them. They will be at the top of the 'who' list.

What else is there
There are so many functions and features in game, that I have a terribly hard time trying to think about all of it, let alone to document it all properly and fashionably. This is Kell's fault. This is a great world to explore, because there is place is like an iceberg, so much more exists where it cannot be seen.
